Slimming

Even though the slimming industry is one of the most lucrative in the world today, there are still millions of people who are overweight and obese. The variety of slimming products currently on the market is astounding however many of them have their flaws – one of which is normally their price. Slimming pills for instance need to be taken everyday, sometimes two or three times each day, while the dermopatches also require regular changing and this can work out to be quite an expensive way to slim down. These slimming products are no substitute for natural slimming methods and some have been know to produce unwanted side effects.

Slimming the Natural Way

It is normally possible to slim down to a healthy weight in a natural way, with no help from chemical or herbal products. This way takes hard work and dedication however, and so you would need to have motivation in order to get results.

There are three basic steps to achieving a slimmer body in a natural way:
        Firstly you need a goal.
Secondly you need to eat a sensible healthy diet.
Thirdly you have to be prepared to exercise regularly.

If you can sustain all three then there is no reason – other than a recognised medical reason – why you can’t slim down to your target weight.

Having a Goal

The best way to stay motivated when slimming is to have a goal to aim for. This means you need to have a target weight or dress size that you want to achieve. You will also need to set a time frame for accomplishing your goal. So for example, you might want to lose five kilos in weight or maybe a couple of dress sizes. Realistically you aren’t going to achieve this in a week or two and so you need to set a realistic time frame for losing your weight.

Healthy weight loss is estimated to be about 2kg per week, maybe a bit more if you are very overweight. So to lose a stone you are realistically looking at 10-14 weeks. It is possible to lose weight more quickly however rapid weight loss normally results in rebounding and in some cases you end up weighing more than you did to begin with.

Once you have a goal and a time frame to achieve it in you can start the slimming process.

Eating Sensibly

You don’t actually need to diet in order to slim. Slimming can be achieved by making subtle changes to your diet and eating habits. Obviously you can diet if you choose to but again, losing weight too quickly can result in rebound eating. The aim of changing your diet and eating habits is to naturally increase your metabolism rate. This means that when you do eat food it is used by the body more quickly and effectively and isn’t stored as fat.

There are numerous ways to increase your metabolism rate however two are much more successful than the rest:

Eating breakfast is one of the easiest ways to boost your metabolism. Scientific research has shown that eating a healthy and nutritious breakfast can kick start your metabolism and so the food you eat during that day is used as effectively as possible. Healthy breakfast foods include whole grain cereals, eggs, fruit, low fat milk, fruit juices and protein shakes. It also helps if you can eat breakfast at a set time each morning.

Eating five or six small meals throughout the day is much better for your metabolism than eating two or three large meals each day. This is because your metabolism drops during the period between meals and it is during this phase that unused nutrients are stored by the body, often as fat deposits. By eating regularly, your metabolism stays high and so everything you eat is used and not stored. It also means that you are less inclined to snack.

Your diet needs to include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, pulses and grains if you can and a range of healthily cooked meats. You should also try to eat dairy products in moderation. A small treat each day can help to reward a good day so that slimming doesn’t feel like a burden.

Exercising Regularly

Slimming can be achieved by simply eating sensibly however weight can be lost a lot quicker if you also take regular exercise. The exercise you do will ultimately depend on your initial fitness and so it may be worth talking to your doctor if you are very overweight.

Generally speaking though, you should aim to do 20-30 minutes exercise each day. The exercise you choose needs to raise your heart rate to have an effect however it can be walking round the park or to the shops if you feel like it. As you improve and your weight begins to fall you can either add length to your exercise routine or you can make it more physical e.g. you could start to jog around the park instead of walk.

The key to exercise is to make it fun and one of the easiest ways to do this is to vary the activity.

You can jog one day and do an aerobics class the next, or maybe swimming one day and cycling the next. Doing the same routine everyday results in monotony and this will make you not want to exercise after the first few weeks. It also helps to rope a partner or friend into exercising with you as then there is a little competition to keep you going.

In most cases, slimming isn’t difficult to do. You just need the initial impetus and ongoing motivation and commitment in order to reach your goal. Once you do however you’ll be well on the way to a healthier, slimmer you.
